John Walshe Murray
John Walshe Murray received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974, and his Juris Doctor degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco in 1977. Admitted to the State Bar of California in 1977, Mr. Murray is licensed to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of California, the United States District Court for all districts of California, the United States Bankruptcy Court for all districts of California, the United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Ninth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Murray is a senior member and managing director of Murray & Murray, having practiced for over 32 years exclusively in the areas of bankruptcy, business reorganization and creditors' and debtors' rights. Mr. Murray's practice is concentrated in Northern California with an emphasis in the greater Silicon Valley business community. He has been involved in more than 700 bankruptcy and bankruptcy-related cases, including over 90 Chapter 11 debtor and trustee representations, 40 Chapter 11 creditors' committee representations, 170 creditor representations, 85 Chapter 7 trustee representations and 125 Chapter 7 debtor representations. Mr. Murray's recent Chapter 11 debtor engagements include Calico Commerce, Inc.; Catapult Entertainment, Inc.; CFLC, Inc., fka Everex Systems, Inc.; ComUnity Lending, Incorporated; Egghead.com, Inc.; Fillmore Grill LLC; RedEnvelope, Inc.; Swift Instruments, Inc.; The Legacy Estate Group LLC (Freemark Abbey Winery, Arrowood Vineyards & Winery and Byron Vineyard & Winery); Una Mas Restaurants, Inc.; and V3 Semiconductor, Inc. Mr. Murray has also acted as an expert witness on bankruptcy issues in a number of civil actions.
Specializing in bankruptcy and business reorganization since 1977, Mr. Murray has lectured for the Practising Law Institute, CLE International, Turnaround Management Association, the Bay Area Bankruptcy Forum, VentureWire Executive Summit, the Annual Bankruptcy & Reorganization Conference of The Association of Insolvency Accountants, California Continuing Education of the Bar, the Santa Clara County Bar Association, Santa Clara University School of Law and numerous local business organizations on the subjects of bankruptcy and business reorganization. He has authored articles on bankruptcy including Assumption And Assignment Of Patent Licenses Under Chapter 11 Of The Bankruptcy Code published in the Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice; Duties and Obligations of Officers and Directors in Chapter 11; Bankruptcy Issues for the Intellectual Property Lawyer; What Every Officer and Director Should Know When the Company is on the Brink; and The Business Lawyer's Guide To The 2005 Bankruptcy Amendments. He also served as an editorial consultant for Matthew Bender, and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America; Northern California Super Lawyers (featuring the top five percent of attorneys in Northern California); and Best of the U.S. (including "Best of Class"). He is also listed as one of the best lawyers in the San Francisco Bay Area by Bay Area Lawyer Magazine.
Mr. Murray is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (limited to one third of one percent of the lawyers in each state) and a Master of the Bench of the Congressman Don Edwards Inn of the American Inns of Court, serving as its charter vice president and president-elect. He also served as the first chair of the Committee of Lawyer Representatives for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, now known as the Bench Bar Liaison Committee, and as a charter director of the Bay Area Bankruptcy Forum. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees, and chaired the Bankruptcy Group of the Peninsula CPA•Bar Alliance. He is also a member of the Business Law Sections of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association, and the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Sections of the San Francisco and Santa Clara County Bar Associations. Mr. Murray also served as a Resolution Advocate for the Bankruptcy Dispute Resolution Program for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.
Born in San Francisco and reared in Palo Alto, Mr. Murray attended Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose prior to his admission to the University of California at Berkeley. He resides in Portola Valley with his wife, Patty, and enjoys visits from his "twenty something" children, Kelley, John and Katie. Mr. Murray enjoys tennis, swimming, sailing, scuba diving, skiing, snow boarding and long distance running, and is active in the community having served as a director and president of Alpine Hills Tennis & Swimming Club, and as president of the Portola Valley Schools Foundation where he chaired its 21st Century Fund Capital Campaign.
